Best Nintendo 3DS games: 20 titles you should take on the go

Best Nintendo 3DS games: 20 titles you should take on the go

Though Nintendo hasn't always performed strongly when it comes to home consoles (rest in peace Wii U), when it comes to handheld gaming experience it's been the company to beat.

Nintendo is able to boast some of the highest handheld console sales in history and the company's willingness to push boundaries with its hardware designs has undoubtedly played a big part in securing this legacy.

With its most recent handheld console, the 2DS XL we feel Nintendo has only strengthened that legacy.

With the 2DS XL, Nintendo has reaffirmed its commitment to continue to support the DS platform despite the release of the Nintendo Switch.

Considering the Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 62 million units since it launched six years ago and therefore has an extremely large and active install base, it's not surprising that Nintendo is willing to continue to support its games and arguably draw more attention to them with a new model.

The Nintendo 3DS and the new 2DS XL are surprisingly powerful handheld consoles despite their small size.

Mobile gaming is increasingly popular and though Nintendo is entering into this market itself, there's still a large proportion of gamers who are looking for portable games with more depth than you can currently find in the app store.

Sure, you can now get Mario on your mobile but if you'd rather have the full Super Mario experience you're still going to have to turn to the 3DS. And as much as we love Pokemon Go, we don't want to miss the full experience of Pokémon Sun and Moon.

No matter what kind of game you like to play, you'll find something to suit your tastes on the 3DS or 2DS XL, and you won't be able to find many of the titles anywhere else. From slow and easygoing life simulators like Animal Crossing, to fast-paced platformers like Super Mario 3D land you're not short of options.

So read on for the 20 best 3DS games, or if you're looking to dip your toe into the more retro DS library, then check out our list of the best Nintendo DS games.

While Mario has always been bold and brave, his brother Luigi is … well, not. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon follows the less adventurous of the two Mario Bros. as he wanders through mansions with a tepid nervousness that’s just as likely to make you laugh as it is to sympathize with the game’s green-hatted hero.

Dark Moon, the sequel to the original Luigi’s Mansion on the Nintendo GameCube, is an adventure game through and through. You’ll solve puzzles, collect coins and generally revel in the game’s spooky – but never overwhelmingly frightening – abodes. If you’re looking for smart, funny platforming, Dark Moon is the bite-size adventure you’ve been yearning for.

Mario sports games have always been a contentious affair. Whether you remember slamming home goals in Super Mario Strikers, smashing an ace in Super Mario Tennis or shooting an eagle in the original Mario Golf title, most of the Nintendo sports titles starring the mustachioed mascot have been memorable, enjoyable – and yes, even competitive – affairs.

Mario Golf: World Tour does nothing to break that trend. Simple tutorials ease you into the world of Lukitos and Chain Chomp-equipped lawns, while local and online multiplayer compel you to take your game to the next level.

You might’ve billed Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as cash-in remakes of two somewhat middling entries in the monster catching franchise. There’s no shame in it. That’s what we thought, too. But actually sitting down with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is like seeing a friend after a decade apart: you’re both different people than you were 10 years ago, but just as fond of one another now as you were then.

The 3DS versions of Ruby and Sapphire add a number of interesting – even ground-breaking – new features like Mega Evolutions from X and Y, and Pokémon Box that allows you to send monsters to yourself from one game in the franchise to the next.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you find yourself thrust into the role of a village’s new mayor, which means it’s up to you to help make the rules and aid in the burg’s development. Don’t fret, though: it’s a pretty chill gig. You’ll still have time to go fishing, catch bugs, design clothes, dig up fossils, decorate and expand your home, and hang out with friends doing lots of relaxing stuff. The 3DS’s online and StreetPass functionality are put to great use here, allowing you to visit friends’ towns see how other players’ homes are decorated.

Japanese role-playing games aren’t as ubiquitous as they once were, but they haven’t gone away – they’ve simply found new homes on systems like the 3DS. Furthermore, Bravely Default is one of the best examples of the genre in recent years, combining modern technology and excellent storytelling with genre staples like random enemy encounters, turn-based battles, and a job system that lets you choose your characters’ abilities. Sure, the game’s title sounds weird, but it’s actually tied to its deeply strategic battle system, in which you “default” by skipping your turn in battle, then use “brave” attacks that allow you to unleash multiple strikes in one go.

After being out of action for many years, Donkey Kong finally made his platforming comeback with Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii, and this 3D version could be even better than the original. It contains everything that fans loved about the classic DKC titles: enemies to jump on, bananas to collect, mine carts to ride, secrets to uncover, and wacky bosses to overcome. It may look like a bunch of monkey business, but don’t be fooled – the game can be extremely challenging.

The strategy-RPG series Fire Emblem has been around for quite some time, but the 3DS entry is arguably the best yet. With a variety of unique heroes at your disposal, you’ll engage in turn-driven, grid-based combat to bring peace to the land of Ylisse. When you’re not fighting enemies, you’ll work to build up relationships between characters, which allows them to not only cooperate better in battle, but to get married and have children, who also become playable characters. Lots of downloadable extra missions add to the depth and longevity of this game.

Yoshi's Woolly World is one of our recommended titles on Wii U, but if you can't get your hands on the console version we absolutely recommend you don't miss out on this handheld port.

Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World contains all of the levels of the Wii U title, with a couple of extra stages tarring Poochy, which is perhaps a way to make up for the fact that the co-op mode of the console version is now gone.

The game is a standard 2D platformer but it has interestingly designed levels as well as lovely knitted graphics that help it stand apart from the rest of the games you can pick up in the genre.

Whether you’re new to the Legend of Zelda series or a seasoned vet, A Link Between Worlds offers fantasy adventuring at its finest. Though the overhead presentation and narrative connection to 1992’s A Link to the Past make this entry something of a throwback, new elements such as the ability to rent items and tackle dungeons in nearly any order – as well as Link’s newfound power to merge with walls by becoming a 2D painting – breathe fresh new life into the Zelda franchise. Traveling between Hyrule and its alternate-reality counterpart, Lorule, you’ll overcome brilliantly designed dungeons and engage in numerous side quests.

The original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 is one of the most acclaimed games ever made, and this enhanced version is even better. Not only does it feature the same epic, time-traveling tale, packed with puzzles, peril, and sword-swinging action, but it boasts vastly enhanced graphics and more user-friendly gameplay, such as gyroscopic targeting and optional extra hints. If you’re up for the challenge, you can tackle Master Quest mode, which features greater difficulty and a mirrored world map.

Like the other games in the series that have come before it, Mario Kart 7 is nothing short of pure, adrenaline-filled, racing excitement. Choose from one of 16 popular Mario characters (or a Mii), pick your kart, your tires, and your glider, then use all your skills (and any items you can snag) to outrace and outwit your competitors in crazily designed courses like Mario Circuit and Neo Bowser City. Underwater and aerial segments introduced in this installment make this one of the most varied Kart games yet, and classic courses from past entries add to the fun. A robust online community ensures you’ll never lack competition, too.

Majora’s Mask in 3D might be the third Legend of Zelda game on this list, but we wouldn’t dream of not including this excellent remake of the Nintendo 64 classic. When compared to the blockbusters that make up the rest of the Zelda series, Majora’s Mask often seems to not quite hold up in comparison, but it’s by no means a bad game. On the contrary, it’s time specific quests and puzzles are a quite unique addition to the Zelda formula, and continue to work excellently in this handheld format.

Being 12 years old, it can be hard for newcomers to break into the action-RPG Monster Hunter franchise, but Generations is by far the most accessible title in recent history.

The mechanics are still complex and the learning curve is steep, but Generations overhauls combat enough that players can take new approaches on the battlefield. These changes level the playing field for complete beginners but don’t grate on old fans as it’s a change which also benefits them.

In Monster Hunter Generations, players once more take up the role of a hunter who is on a quest to take on dangerous monsters in an ancient world, moving between offline and online quests to progress.

As ever, don’t expect much of a story to pull you through the game, instead the incentive to progress in Monster Hunter comes from securing better and more powerful equipment that allows you to unlock the next tier of quests.

Pokémon Sun and Moon mark the start of the seventh generation of the Pokémon series, which only seems to be going from strength to strength, despite being 20 years old.

Taking place in a new Hawaii-inspired region called Alola, Sun and Moon introduce all new creatures to catch, characters to meet, and locations to explore.

Though the familiar core mechanics are still there, Sun and Moon make a lot of interesting changes to a franchise that isn’t known for doing so. By scrapping gyms for island trials, introducing an entirely new battle mode, and greatly improving visuals Sun and Moon make for a refreshing update. Never before has a Pokémon game had quite so much character.

Although the Sun and Moon versions of the game are mostly the same, each version features exclusive Pokémon, so you’ll have to trade with other players (online or offline) if you want to catch ’em all.

Level 5’s Professor Layton games consistently offer some of the best puzzle solving gameplay on the Nintendo 3DS so it’s really something to say that Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is possibly the best of the bunch. It might be the sixth in the series but fortunately you don’t have to have played any of the previous titles to understand the story.

This game’s beautiful animation, genuinely challenging puzzles, and engaging, not to mention long, story make it a title you absolutely don’t want to miss.

Not only that, it’s great value for money; even after you complete the main story the game has 365 additional puzzles for you to unlock and solve.

Originally a download-only game that was funded through Kickstarter, Shovel Knight has bucked trends and exceeded expectations by reappearing as a packaged release. And with good reason: it’s really, really fun. Despite the retro visuals, this action-platformer is just as good as anything else released today, and it’s bursting with clever techniques, useful power-ups, interesting level design, awesome 3D effects, and a keen sense of humor. Where else are you going to find a shovel-wielding knight battling flying roto-rats? There’s even a Shovel Knight amiibo toy and additional content coming in the form of free DLC!

It’s hard to go wrong with Mario, and Super Mario 3D Land is quite possibly the plumber’s best handheld outing ever. Featuring the same kind of block-bashing, enemy-stomping, pipe-entering fun that made Mario a household name, this game ups the ante with wonderfully creative level design and whimsical power-ups like a boomerang suit and the Tanooki outfit from Super Mario Bros. 3. The game makes great use of the system’s stereoscopic 3D capabilities, and there are surprises hidden around every turn, including a ton of challenging bonus levels that don’t become available until after you’ve beaten the main game.

If you want frantic action and an endless supply of Nintendo fan service, look no further than Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Gaming’s biggest characters are here (along with a few of the more obscure) – Mario, Sonic, Link, Mega Man, Samus Aran, Little Mac, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and dozens of others – all duking it out in stages based on hit Nintendo properties. If you’ve played any previous game in this series, you know the drill: whittle down your opponents with standard attacks and special moves, then send ’em flying off the stage! Naturally, you can play the game solo, or you can fight in matches with up to four players either locally or online.

If you're a fan of RPGs, the 3DS is a great choice of console and Bravely Second: End Layer is one of the best games in the genre.

From Square Enix, it's the sequel to the highly praised JRPG Bravely Default. Bravely Second is a continuation of the story in the original game, two and a half years later, bringing in new worlds to explore and new enemies to defeat in the same turn-based combat system.

If you enjoyed Bravely Default, it's absolutely worth playing Bravely Second as it brings most of what made that game great back to the table. In some ways it's so similar it could be considered a fault, but if it's not broke, why fix it?

Feel like you've played every Super Mario level there is to play? Well, it's time to start playing your own.

Super Mario Maker is also available on Wii U and this version is just as intuitive and easy to use as that one but it has the added benefit of being able to play it on the go.

For a 3DS port this is an incredibly feature rich game that has a lot to offer players willing to push their creativity. Though it can't hold quite as many items as the Wii U version as a result of system limitations it's still got over 60 interesting tools to choose from for building.

There are some online level sharing limitations that prove frustrating and disappointing but as far as level creating games go, this is a solid one and well worth picking up if you can't get to the Wii U version.

The best iPhone 7 Plus deals in June 2017

Elon Musk says LA is open to his Boring idea: underground traffic tunnels

Elon Musk says LA is open to his Boring idea: underground traffic tunnels

Elon Musk’s passion for tunnels is surprisingly infectious, with the tech entrepreneur revealing that he’s recently had “promising conversations” with the mayor of Los Angeles to bring The Boring Company's underground traffic solution to the city.

In a tweet, Musk said that his planned network of tunnels would be able to “carry cars, bikes and pedestrians” in an attempt to reduce overground congestion. He did, however, add that at the moment securing the permits required to build such an extensive underground network would be more difficult than developing the technology.

To back up his assertion that Eric Garcetti is interested in the idea, Musk linked a recent interview the mayor had on ABC where he mentioned Musk’s tunneling technology as a means of creating a quick and direct line to the city’s airport.

Plans are up in the air

Judging from the interview clip it seems Garcetti is more thinking along the lines of an express train rather than an extensive tunnel network for bikes and pedestrians but it’s an indication talks are indeed happening. What stage they’re at we can’t be sure of.

Though Los Angeles’ mayor is showing interest, not everyone thinks that Musk’s underground traffic solution is a good one.

According to DriveSpark, In a recent sustainable mobility conference this week in Montreal, Uber Elevate Director of Engineering Mark Moore talked up airborne transportation as the best way to reduce congestion while challenging the cost-effectiveness of Musk’s tunneling plans.

Elon Musk hasn’t hidden his feelings about flying cars – on The Boring Company’s FAQ page it says: “Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won't fall on your head.”

This is a pretty damning indictment of the flying car solution Uber feels so strongly about, so it’s not surprising that Moore slammed Musk’s tunneling plans for not being “economically feasible".

Uber plans to start testing its VTOL mobility system in Dallas in 2020, with plans for a commercial launch of the service in 2023 which is a more solid timeline than The Boring Company currently has.

Considering the trouble drones already face in terms of use restrictions, Uber may find securing permits for flying cars won't be any easier than The Boring Company getting the greenlight for digging networks of underground tunnels.

Whatever happens, it's great to see two big tech companies tackling the problem of heavily congested cities, even if their plans are rather ambitious.

OnePlus 5 release date, news and rumors

OnePlus 5 release date, news and rumors

Update: The OnePlus 5 is launching tomorrow (June 20)! So we'll soon know everything there is to know. But ahead of that a last minute rumor has pointed to a worryingly small battery. Read on below for all the latest on the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5 is arriving tomorrow, as the Chinese startup has now confirmed the name of its next flagship smartphone and that it will land on June 20.

OnePlus has managed to consistently stand out from the crowd by offering high-end hardware at a mid-range price, but even to say that undersells its achievements.

The company often out-specs rivals with its 'Never Settle' mantra and clearly puts time and thought into its phones, yet still manages to sell them for less.

All of that is true of the OnePlus 3T, which has a massive 6GB of RAM, along with a premium build and high-end specs throughout, all for just $439, £399 (around AU$580).

It's a remarkable phone then, but it's not perfect and we've come up with a wish list of things (on page 2) that we want to see for the OnePlus 5.

You'll find all the latest news and rumors about the OnePlus 5 on this page, along with speculation and analysis to fill in the gaps.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next affordable flagship from OnePlus
  • When is it out? Launching June 20, available summer 2017
  • What will it cost? At least £400, $439, AU$580, could be more

OnePlus 5 release date

Hottest leaks:

  • A June 20 launch
  • Confirmed: coming 'Summer 2017'
  • May hit stores on June 22

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will be announced on June 20. That's tomorrow!

And that's in line with previous launches, as the OnePlus One launched in April 2014, the OnePlus 2 in July 2015 and the OnePlus 3 in June 2016.

We don't yet know for sure when it will be available to purchase in the UK, US or Australia, but Amazon India is listing it for June 22, so it's likely to land elsewhere on that date too.

Either way,  OnePlus has teased the phone for "Summer 2017" so we probably won't be waiting much longer, especially as the company has stopped selling the OnePlus 3T already.

TechRadar's take: The launch date has now been confirmed for June 20, while June 22 looks likely for when you'll be able to buy it.

The name: OnePlus 5 vs OnePlus 4

  • It will be called the OnePlus 5
  • We won't get a OnePlus 4

The eagle-eyed among you will note that we've not had a OnePlus 4. We've had the OnePlus One, OnePlus 2, OnePlus X, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T – and now we're getting the OnePlus 5.

Why 5? The number 4 is a sign of bad luck in China, which is the main thinking as to why we're going straight to the OnePlus 5. It would also, technically, be the fifth flagship phone (ignoring the short-lived OnePlus X) with the OnePlus 3T taking the fourth generation spot.

Thing is, apparently neither of those are the reason behind the name. According to OnePlus, it was apparently inspired by the former NBA player Robert Horry who had a number five jersey and is a popular player among OnePlus employees.

OnePlus 4

The OnePlus 3T is great – but there’s still room for improvement

OnePlus 5 screen

Hottest leaks:

  • A change in technology
  • A 5.3 or 5.5-inch 2K display

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have a 5.5-inch 1080 x 1920 display, just like the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus One. Given how staunchly the company has stuck to that size and resolution combination it's tempting to think it will do the same with the OnePlus 4, and that's certainly possible.

In fact, one tipster has said exactly that, but the image they shared along with that claim is now known to be false, and we reckon OnePlus might push the resolution up to 1440 x 2560.

That possibility has also been rumored, with talk of a 5.3-inch screen of that resolution, while another source points to a 5.5-inch QHD display.

The resolution of the screen on the OnePlus 3T is one of its few faults and one of the only areas you can really point to and say that's where the company cut corners.

To make an impact this year it's likely to push the resolution up, especially since now just about every flagship has a QHD or higher resolution screen.

But why do we need to push resolution above 1080p on such a small screen? Two letters: VR. Virtual Reality was big in 2016, even OnePlus has got in on the act launching the OnePlus 3 in VR (and the OnePlus 2 in 2015), but for the best experiences you need a high resolution display.

A 2K screen would improve the VR experience on the OnePlus 5, as well as giving a boost to movies and gaming.

OnePlus 4

All previous OnePlus flagships have a full HD display

The  rumored drop in size to 5.3 inches is more surprising. OnePlus only makes one or two phones a year and while there's no such thing as one size fits all the company is going to want to get close.

Big phones are growing in popularity and it's done well with the 5.5-inch size point, so we'd be surprised if it really gets any smaller, but any bigger pushes it into phablet territory, which is a relatively niche market.

We may see a move from AMOLED back to LCD though, as OnePlus is reportedly struggling to source enough AMOLED panels to keep up with OnePlus 3 demand. Then again, the first OnePlus 5 rumors point to AMOLED still.

TechRadar's take: We reckon the OnePlus 5 will have a 5.3-5.5-inch QHD LCD screen – so roughly the same size as the OnePlus 3, but higher resolution to catch up with rivals, and a return to previous tech due to AMOLED shortages.

OnePlus 5 design

Hottest leaks:

  • A metal body

OnePlus has jumped the gun in sharing an official image showing the back of the OnePlus 5. From this we can see that it's almost certainly made of metal, with curved edges and an antenna band running along the top edge. There's likely also one at the bottom, but that's not visible in the picture.

You can also see a power button and SIM card slot on right edge, while the top edge has no buttons or ports. All in all it looks to be a plain but polished design.

It also lines up with recent leaks like the one below, which shows off not only the OnePlus 5's back, but its front and sides too.

Credit: Android Police

Build aside, we're hoping for further bezel slimming from its predecessor – allowing the OnePlus 5 to sport a more compact frame even though it houses a 5.5-inch display.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 boasts a larger 5.8-inch screen, but it's narrower and shorter than the OnePlus 3T, which means the OnePlus 5 should be able to slim down a bit.

And there's reason to think the OnePlus 5 will be smaller than the 3T, as OnePlus has tweeted a teaser image of the 5 under the 3T. You can't really see it – but that's the point, as if it was as big as the 3T the edges would be visible.

We won't mind if OnePlus makes its next flagship slightly thicker, allowing it to reduce bezel size while making a bit more room for a bigger battery. And space for a microSD slot? We can but dream.

A teaser has also suggested there will be four colors for the OnePlus 5. Pictured below you can see the black, red and gold versions, but number two is a bit bold compared to the others and OnePlus is calling it "Unicorn color".

TechRadar's take: The OnePlus 5 will probably have a metal back and has been shown to be more an evolution of the OnePlus 3T's design than a complete change.

OnePlus 5 camera

Hottest leaks:

  • Confirmed: a dual-lens camera
  • 12MP rear and 8MP front snappers
  • Augmented and mixed reality features

We now know for sure that the OnePlus 5 has a dual-lens camera, as the company has revealed as much in a recent tweet.

The tweet also has the tagline "Dual Camera. Clearer Photos", which suggests that it will be a monochrome and color lens pairing, since that would allow it to capture more light and detail, for clearer photos.

Exactly that has been claimed in a leak, which also says that both lenses will be 12MP, and there will be an 8MP front-facing camera.

The suggestion that one lens will be monochrome and one will be color seems to have also been backed up by some images that have leaked on to the web.

And a recent leak gives us another look at that now-confirmed camera setup.

OnePlus co-founder Liu Zuoto also revealed the first black and white camera sample from the OnePlus 5, which you can see below. It looks to be sharp and impressive considering it's taken on a smartphone, but there's no confirmation from OnePlus yet that it hasn't been some post-production tweaking as well.

OnePlus has announced that it's working with camera expert DxOMark to improve the quality of the camera on the OnePlus 5. No specifics were given, but the company has since shown a teaser photo, demonstrating strong low-light performance. And we've also heard rumors of the form these improvements might take.

For one thing, other than the camera being dual-lens, one source talks about augmented reality and mixed reality functions, though no details are given on the specifics of these features.

We've also seen a leaked retail box with that now-official dual camera tagline, and a leaked teaser image, (below) which shows us a seemingly accurate view of the camera and rear of the phone.

Credit: Weibo

These changes make sense. A lot of work was put into the camera on the OnePlus 3T. Both rear and front sensors have a high megapixel count (16MP on both), there's optical image stabilization and plenty of other features.

But the end result is a snapper which still isn't quite up to the standards of the best around, so beyond being dual-lens expect the camera on the OnePlus 5 to be further tuned and improved. That's not to say it's a bad offering, it's just the bar has been raised so high it's difficult – on a budget – to match it.

OnePlus 4

Credit: anzhuo.cn

Surprisingly, a leaked sketch shared by Chinese site anzhuo has shown a dual front-facing camera. No details of its specs are included and this is the first we've heard of that, so we're highly skeptical, but can't rule it out.

TechRadar's take: We now know for sure that the rear camera is dual-lens. A 12MP rear camera is likely, as this would both change things up and fall in line with rivals.

OnePlus 5 battery

Hottest leaks:

  • A 4000mAh juice pack
  • Seriously fast charging

Battery life is one area which OnePlus will hopefully be focusing on for this year's handset. The company delivered great life with the 3,400mAh OnePlus 3T and we want to see a repeat of that – or something even better.

Fortunately, it sounds like that might be what we'll get, with rumors of a 4000mAh juice pack.

Then again, another source says to expect just a 3,600mAh juice pack – but with 25% faster charging speeds.

The Dash Charge tech OnePlus has employed in the 3 is already impressive, and we fully expect to see it return in the OnePlus 5. It could be even faster too, as sister company Oppo unveiled an even speedier charging tech at MWC 2016.

One source claims it will have Dash Charge 2.0, though its description of being able to get a full day's charge in half an hour is the same as the claims OnePlus made about the original Dash Charge. The same source says the phone will have a 3,580mAh juice pack.

And yet another source shared the (admittedly sketchy) image above, suggesting the OnePlus 5 will have just a 3,300mAh juice pack.

As sketchy as that image seems, the same rumor has now popped up again, courtesy of the image below, so it could well be true. You can also see another mention of Dash Charge with a day's power in half an hour.

Credit: MyDrivers

If this is true that would be a drop in size, which is possible, especially since the overall handset could be getting smaller, but wouldn't make for much of a selling point.

TechRadar's take: Evidence suggests the battery might have shrunk to 3,300mAh.

OnePlus 5 OS and power

Hottest leaks:

  • Confirmed: Snapdragon 835 chipset
  • 8GB of RAM

OnePlus flagships are always among the most powerful around, at least on paper, and we don't expect that will change with the OnePlus 5.

In fact, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will use the high-end Snapdragon 835 chipset.

That's the same chip that you'll find in the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, HTC U 11 and US variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. In short then, the OnePlus 5 is not going to be short of power.

Alongside that we may see 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, although another Weibo source claims that the amount of RAM could be upped to 8GB.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has also hinted the storage tech used on the OnePlus 5 will be the superior UFS 2.1, which will allow for faster reading and writing speeds than previous OnePlus phones.

Reliable leaker Evan Blass also points to 8GB of RAM, while saying the Snapdragon 835 chipset will be clocked at 2.35GHz. That information seemingly comes from source code on Amazon India's website, so it's likely accurate.

And the 8GB of RAM spec has also been outed by PCPop.com, and it would certainly be eye-catching on paper – it's unlikely to have much of a noticeable advantage in general usage though.

A benchmark also lists 8GB of RAM and a multi-core score of 6562, which is comparable with other flagships, but actually lower than the 6630-scoring Samsung Galaxy S8, despite there being twice as much RAM in the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5 will almost certainly run Android (likely Android Nougat) overlaid with OnePlus' own Oxygen OS.

TechRadar managed to get hold of internal speed testing stats from the OnePlus 5 production line, which shows the upcoming handset could well be faster than the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel XL.

While we wait for the final components to be confirmed, it looks like it's safe to say the OnePlus 5 will be supremely powerful.

App opening speeds: OnePlus 5 vs Galaxy S8 vs Pixel XL

TechRadar's take: The Snapdragon 835 has been confirmed and 8GB of RAM is looking likely.

OnePlus 5 other features

Hottest leaks:

  • 128GB of storage
  • Two speaker grilles
  • No headphone port

The OnePlus 3T has a fingerprint scanner, so expect that to return. It's possible that OnePlus will add other features for its next phone, perhaps an iris scanner for example, since Samsung has started using them.

But, on the other hand, the company will likely be focused on making the best phone it can while keeping costs down, so if it doesn't think a feature is worthwhile or likely to be used by many then it probably won't include it. An example of that is the lack of NFC on the OnePlus 2.

The other question is whether the OnePlus 5 will come with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Motorola and Apple have dropped the aging audio technology from recent phone releases – including the Moto Z Force and iPhone 7 – and it seems Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, is interested in whether the community thinks the headphone jack is necessary.

The result was overwhelmingly in favor of the OnePlus 5 keeping the headphone jack, so you'd think it would be likely that the phone will keep the 3.5mm jack.

There were suggestions that OnePlus was moving the location of the headphone jack to the top of the phone after a couple of cryptic tweets from Carl Pei, but an official image of the phone has shown that isn't the case.

The image doesn't show the bottom edge, so we can't say for sure whether there's a headphone port or not, but we'd expect there will be.

As for storage, that could jump to 128GB if early rumors are to be believed.

TechRadar's take: We don't expect feature-overload on the OnePlus 5, but old features like the fingerprint scanner are likely to return.

OnePlus 5 price

  • The OnePlus 3T launched at $439 (£399, around AU$580)
  • We expect there to be a price increase for the OnePlus 5

The super low price of past OnePlus phones may be about to disappear for the OnePlus 5

A source speaking to Android Authority claims the company is planning to use "more costly components" on the new phone and will therefore have to increase the price.

The source claims the OnePlus 5 will cost about $650 (£500, AU$880), which is much more than the OnePlus 3T, which launched at $439 (£399, around AU$580).

That price hike has also been backed up by details of a prize fund offered by OnePlus. The company is giving away a OnePlus 5 handset and VIP tickets for Provinssi Festival that make a prize fund worth €948.

If you were to buy the VIP tickets to Provinssi Festival separately it would cost €398, meaning the phone should be worth €550. It may be the prize fund will include travel, food or any other element though so the source isn't 100% accurate.

Previously a store listing suggested the OnePlus 5 would have a much smaller price increase only up to $449, but the latest information may supersede that. It's looking pretty certain there will be a price increase of sorts, but we don't currently know exactly how much it'll be.

The OnePlus 5 isn't far off now, so here's our top ten wish list for the next flagship phone. Check it out below and let us know if we missed anything that you want to see.

1. A QHD screen

OnePlus has stuck with a 1080p display since day one and with each passing year it becomes that little bit more questionable.

It’s still fine, but noticeably less sharp than a QHD display and it’s becoming less and less flagship-worthy, so we’re hoping for a jump in resolution next year.

Arguably that’s more important than power improvements, given that there’s not much that can tax top-end phones at this point anyway.

2. More storage and room for expansion

The OnePlus 3 comes with 64GB of storage, which is a generous amount, especially for the price. But there are no other options, so if you want more you can’t have it and equally if you don’t need that much and would rather pay a little less for something smaller that’s not an option either.

Worse, there’s no microSD card slot, so you really are limited to what’s built in. That 64GB will probably be enough for most people, but not for everyone, so it would be great if the OnePlus 4 gives us room for expansion.

3. Sharper snaps

OnePlus 3

As high-spec and feature-packed as the camera on the OnePlus 3 is it’s not perfect, with shots sometimes coming out blurry and a little dark, especially when the lighting isn’t ideal.

We don’t need more megapixels next year, but hopefully OnePlus will further tune and polish the camera so it can take shots that rival the best phones around.

4. Double tap to sleep

One handy feature on the OnePlus 3 is being able to double tap the screen to turn it on, but we’d like to see that being taken a step further, with you also being able to double tap the screen when it is on to turn it off.

This might take some work, to ensure that the phone knows when you mean to do that and when you’re just vigorously tapping an application or on-screen button, but it would be a neat, time-saving feature if they can make it work.

5. A more inspired design

OnePlus 3

The OnePlus 3 is undeniably a good looking phone, in fact it looks great, with a metal unibody and a comfortably curved shape. It’s a big improvement on the OnePlus 2 then, but it also looks a lot like plenty of other phones, with more than a passing resemblance to the HTC 10 and iPhone 6S.

That’s not a huge problem, after all there’s only so much you can do with a rectangle and most manufacturers are borrowing at least a little from rivals, but if the OnePlus 4 is to wow on more than just its price, then a different, unique design would really help.

6. Two days of life

OnePlus 3

The OnePlus 3 has more RAM, a faster processor and a higher spec camera than the OnePlus 2, but the battery has shrunk.

With Dash charging you can juice it up quickly, but that doesn’t help when you’re nowhere near a charger, so we’d really like to see improvements in life for the OnePlus 4, either through a larger juice pack or just optimizations.

The OnePlus 3 aims (and largely succeeds) to last a day, but two days of life would be vastly preferable. That way even if you typically stick to a nightly charge you can be confident that it will see you through if you forget or are unable.

7. Waterproofing

While the OnePlus 3 looks great it can’t survive a soaking, which is a problem, given that 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water.

Waterproofing still isn’t a standard feature on phones, but we’d like it to be, especially high-end ones, so hopefully the OnePlus 4 will join the club.

8. Stronger speakers

OnePlus 3

The OnePlus 3 has a single downward firing speaker, which can pump out audio at a pleasing volume but has a tendency to distort if you turn it up too high.

So it would be nice to see a strong speaker in the OnePlus 4. Better yet two speakers, and not on the bottom where they can easily become covered. Improvements to audio through headphones would also be welcome, such as the ability to upscale music quality.

9. A curved screen

Curved screens are likely to become more and more common over the next couple of years. Samsung has embraced them and might be going curves-only for the Galaxy S8.

Apple is also rumored to be adding curves to its phones in the near future and once that happens everyone is likely to follow, so it’s not too far-fetched to think that OnePlus might.

Of course curves for the sake of curves could be pointless, but Samsung has shown how they can be genuinely beneficial with Edge screen functions and we’d like to see OnePlus follow suit, or come up with its own uses for curves.

10. A dual-lens camera

LG G5

The OnePlus 4 is bound to have a better camera than the OnePlus 3, but we don’t just want a better camera, we want an extra lens, giving it more versatility.

An implementation a bit like the LG G5 – where one lens is specifically designed for wide-angle shots, would be great. Then the other can be a standard one along the lines of what the OnePlus 3 has, so users will have the tools to take great shots in almost any situation.

OnePlus 5 could have a worryingly small battery

OnePlus 5 could have a worryingly small battery

One of the few aspects of the OnePlus 5 that there’s no real agreement on is the size of the battery, with numerous different rumors claiming everything from a 3,300mAh juice pack to a 4,000mAh one, and now we’ve got another one to add to the mix, and it points to one of the smallest sizes yet.

An image shared by MyDrivers seems to show part of a description of the battery, possibly taken from the manual or promotional material, and it says there’s just a 3,300mAh one.

That would actually be smaller than the 3,400mAh juice pack in the OnePlus 3T, and while most battery rumors have only emerged once, this would now be the second time we’ve heard this one, suggesting it might well be true.

Given that the overall size of the handset is possibly going to be smaller it would make sense for the battery to be slimmed down as well.

Credit: MyDrivers

Small but fast

But it’s not all bad news, as the same image talks about fast charging, presumably referring to a return of the company’s Dash Charge tech.

Although some of the text is cut off, it looks as though it says “a day’s power in half an hour”, suggesting that even if you do have to plug the OnePlus 5 in more often than you’d like, you shouldn’t have to leave it plugged in for long.

Of course, as with any rumor we’d take this with a pinch of salt, especially as it really just amounts to a paragraph of text which could easily be faked. With the OnePlus 5 set to launch tomorrow we’ll know the truth very soon.

iPhone 7 32GB |  £75 upfront | Unlimited calls and texts |  3GB 6GB data | £29 per month
O2 was already leading the way on its prices for iPhone 7s with a medium amount of data, and now it's even better. If you were worried that 3GB might now be quite enough data for you per month, the doubled 6GB should be plenty. This is a superb deal, despite the fact e2save has just added £15 to the upfront cost. iPhone 7 32GB | £102.99 upfront | Unlimited calls and texts | 16GB data | £34 per month
Really good value 'big data' deal from Vodafone here, with 16GB costing £34 per month. Probably better value than similar deals but Vodafone is the only network doing 16GB plans at the moment which makes it a little hard to compare. LG G6 Plus launched with 128GB of storage and hi-res audio

LG G6 Plus launched with 128GB of storage and hi-res audio

The LG G6 Plus has just been announced, but rather than it being a notable step up from its namesake – like the iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are – there’s not a lot different on the new flagship phone.

There are two main upgrades on the G6 Plus, with 128GB of storage squeezed inside which is an improvement on the 32GB in the standard LG G6, while a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC has also been incorporated into the headphone jack providing hi-res audio support.

You’ll also find a pair of B&O Play earphones in the LG G6 Plus box and it will be available in Optical Astro Black and the new Optical Marine Blue and Optical Terra Gold color variants.

It means the LG G6 Plus still boasts the same (and older) Snapdragon 821 processor and 4GB of RAM as the standard G6, as well as the same 5.7-inch QHD display.

We’re still waiting on a LG G6 Plus price and release date, with LG saying exact dates will be “announced locally in each market.”

New features for the G6 too

The arrival of the G6 Plus is good news for the LG G6 though, as it comes with a new software update which LG will roll out to G6 handsets in the coming weeks and months.

First up is Face Print, that allows you to unlock the G6 and G6 Plus in under a second by holding the phone up to your face without the need to press any buttons. LG says this is "more convenient to use than existing facial recognition technology," but we'll put it to the test during our review.

New Low Power Consumption smarts have also been added, which will hopefully see the G6 improve its battery life performance, but again it's something we'll check out when the update lands on our handset.

Finally the new software adds a covered lens warning, which alerts you when your fingers start to stray over the dual snappers on the rear of the handset.

The best laptops for students in India: top laptops for college and high school

It’s the end of the semester, and you know what the means. That’s right, it’s time to start thinking about making sure that your autumn 2017 semester goes just as swimmingly – if not more so than – as the last. But, of course, you’re going to need the proper tools. That includes a laptop that gets you through your coursework without any onerous labor being added to the mix.

Fortunately, the top laptops for students aren’t hard to find. In fact, most of them come from manufacturers as well-known as Dell, HP, Asus and even Apple. On the downside, not all of the best laptops for students appeal to every type of pupil. Some are focused on sheer horsepower, matching robust graphics with first-rate CPU performance while others are more budget-friendly.

What’s more, with 2-in-1 form factors like the Asus ZenBook Flip S on the rise, there’s an entirely separate category of mobile PCs to choose from. Whatever qualities you desire from your next battery-operated workhorse, we’ve searched high and low for the best laptops for students on the market, 10 of which can be found below:

Packing a high-resolution screen and serious processing power, there's more to the Dell XPS 13 than its status as a tightly kept Ultrabook. Now featuring new processors and better integrated graphics, clearly there’s an advantage to the Dell XPS 13 besides the fact that it comes in Rose Gold.

The 13-inch display, crammed into an 11-inch body, a worthy rival to a certain other aluminum laptop line. What’s more, the Dell XPS 13’s utility is extensive, spanning everything from writing to video editing to everything in between.

While we can admit that Google’s Chromebook Pixel and the HP Chromebook 13 were handsome and built to last, their high price tags weren’t well justified. That’s why Asus has taken it upon itself to craft a full-fledged premium 2-in-1 Chromebook that retails for a fraction of the price.

The Asus Chromebook Flip’s pair of USB Type-C ports, dazzling screen and stunning MacBook-esque looks render it an essential inclusion on our best laptops for students list, especially when you consider its pristine value. And with a battery life of 10 hours and 46 minutes, the Asus Chromebook Flip ought to last you an entire work day, even if the speakers aren’t great.

It’s not a MacBook Air knockoff if it’s better, right? Considering the price, the Asus ZenBook UX305 kicks Apple’s thin-and-light in the tail. Featuring a full HD screen, a whole 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of SSD storage, the Asus ZenBook UX305 is a steal.

Like the Dell XPS 13 listed above, the UX305 is further proof that you can find a truly primo, general use laptop for less than a thousand bucks. The ZenBook UX305 is an attractive, honest-to-goodness laptop that serves as a testament to the demand for well-rounded Ultrabooks.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

A higher resolution screen, a thinner design and full-fledged 6th-generation Intel Skylake processors all work together to make the Surface Pro 4 truly a hybrid that’s just as effective at your desk as it is in your bed.

As Microsoft’s marketing declares, the Surface Pro 4 is the tablet that can replace your laptop (and your desktop too, depending on your needs). With Windows 10, it serves as a great companion device, too. Sadly, the Type Cover keyboard is still an optional necessity.

For less than a grand, you could get a MacBook Air, complete with a sub-1080p screen and a Broadwell processor… or you could buy a Samsung Notebook 7 Spin. A 2-in-1 laptop with an HDR, full HD touchscreen, the Spin is home to both a discrete Nvidia graphics chip and a 6th-generation Intel Core “i” CPU.

Considering the sheer horsepower you can exert from this thing and – we can't stress this enough – an HDR screen, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is as suited for the classroom as it is in your dorm. Though the spinning hard drive and 480p webcam aren’t ideal, they keep the price of the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin modest and its reputation positive.

It’s not much in terms of specs, but with this kind of versatility, the Asus ZenBook Flip UX360 doesn’t need to be. For the price, it’s one of the better 2-in-1 laptops money can afford. It’s thin and light, packing in an all-day battery life and yet maintains all your favorite ports intact.

PC purists and newcomers alike will be delighted to find a pair of USB 3.0 ports joined by USB-C and even the long-endangered SD card reader, though merely an antiquated micro HDMI input. Regardless, this laptop more than makes up for shortcomings, thanks to a spacious trackpad and keyboard as well as a processor that zips through everyday life.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (early 2015)

For students impressed by the sleek-and-alluring 12-inch MacBook, but unsatisfied by the lack of power and ports, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the obvious resolution at long last. With battery life exceeding seven hours and a powerful Intel Core i5 processor, the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro is replete with everything you need to get through the coming semesters.

The 13-inch, late 2016 MacBook Pro weighs only 3.02 pounds (1.37kg), making it lighter than ever before as the result of a slimmed-down, “butterfly” mechanism-powered keyboard and stealthy cooling system. The MacBook Pro even manages a larger trackpad despite the laptop itself being thinner. And, like all macOS-outfitted devices, it ships with Pages, iMovie and Garageband pre-installed at no extra cost.

Though it has yet to adopt Apple's Retina display standard (and may never at this rate), you can take solace in that, with the 13-inch MacBook Air, Apple promises a 12-hour battery life paired with a dual-core Broadwell processor and now starts with a competent 8GB of RAM.

So if you’re skeptical of the 12-inch MacBook's low-travel butterfly keys, the MacBook Air uses a more traditional, chiclet-style keyboard. And hey, a MacBook Air is the most affordable (and pretty much the only) ways to get that backlit Apple logo on the back of your laptop.

The best Nintendo 3DS deals in June 2017

If you're looking for the best Nintendo 3DS deals, you've come to the right place. This is a fantastic time to get a cheap 3DS as retailers continue to unleash discounts as gamers snatch up the Nintendo Switch deals too. We check the prices from all reliable online retailers every few hours to make sure the prices are up to date!

Nintendo has long been boss of the handheld market, but the fact it continues to be so successful in a market now dominated by smartphones is impressive and we're bound to see it rock the handheld scene with some Black Friday deals too. The 3DS software lineup features some of the best first-party Nintendo titles ever and you can always check out our pick of the best Nintendo 3DS games.

Nintendo's latest handheld, the 'New 3DS', is a welcome refresh and definitely worth the upgrade from the original 3DS. On this page we're displaying New 3DS deals, New 3DS XL, 3DS XL (original model) deals and also Nintendo 2DS deals.

What use is a new handheld console without some games though? We've added some cheap 3DS game deals for some of the best 3DS games too. You'll find the latest 3DS prices for new titles like Dragon Quest VII, Mario Party Star Rush and more along with the best Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon deals deals.

A note on chargers

For reasons known only to Nintendo, most 3DS consoles do not come with a mains charger. So if you're in the market for 3DS and don't already have a compatible charger (for an older model maybe?) then you'll need to buy a new one. This is especially important if you're buying a 3DS as a Christmas gift. On the plus side the slate-styled 2DS does come with a charger. We've included some handy links to some 3DS charger deals below (don't forget to check it's compatible with your type of 3DS).

The best Nintendo New 3DS deals…

If you don't already own a 3DS this new version is a no brainer. It's sleeker, the 3D is improved, it has an extra (tiny) analogue stick and it has more powerful components meaning it'll play games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, (the original 3DS will won't play it at all). US stock is exceptionally rare, even the newly released $99 Super Mario editions sold out on day one – fingers crossed they come back in stock soon.

The best Nintendo New 2DS XL deals

Preorders have just opened up for this brand new iteration of Nintendo's wildly popular handheld. Unlike the original 2DS' wedge-like design, the clamshell form returns, which should be much more appealing to older gamers. The 3D tech has been dropped, but you're getting the fantastic XL screen along with the upgraded tech of the 'New' 3DS models. This will be considerably cheaper than the New 3DS XL too.

Cheapest 3DS deals

The best Nintendo New 3DS XL deals…

If the standard New 3DS is a bit small for you, then take a look at the New 3DS XL which is perfect for gamers with larger hands or anyone that fancies a larger screen. Look out for some special edition New 3DS XL models listed below this comparison chart too.

3ds XL deals

The best Nintendo 3DS XL deals

This older model of the 3DS XL is a bit cheaper than the New 3DS XL when you can find a model in stock. The 3DS XL was a favourite for years before the 'New' series arrived. At this price point the 3DS remains as strong a product as ever. US stock has generally been replaced by the newer model, so sometimes the comparison chart below won't show any results.

2ds deals

The best Nintendo 2DS deals…

If the 3D aspect is not for you, you can get a Nintendo 2DS for cheaper. The 2DS is a great way of entering Nintendo’s handheld family without spending much money, but we’re really talking to kids and parents here. Parents of clumsy children have praised the flat design that removes the need for those pesky breakable hinges of the original models.

It’s that excellent lineup of games that makes it even easier to recommend the 2DS. With a generation of kids familiarising themselves with quick and easy games like Angry Birds, it’s important for Nintendo to show them how much better gaming can be. The 2DS is a hell of a lot sturdier than a smartphone or tablet too.
