Best cheap smartphones in Australia for 2017

Best cheap smartphones in Australia for 2017

UPDATE: We're constantly seeing new affordable phones on the Australian market, and the latest one to make our list is the Oppo A57, a cheap option that does not sacrifice style or functionality in order to keep the price low – read on to find out more about it!

While handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S7, iPhone 6S, LG G5 and the HTC 10 are stealing headlines around the world, there's a lot of intriguing (and cheap) stuff going on in the world of budget phones.

Sadly smartphone innovation isn't cheap – and most of it is reserved for high-end contract handsets. There is however such a thing as a good cheap smartphone, and ever so gently all those amazing features from the flagship devices are slowly trickling down to the budget phones.

That's why we have sorted through hundreds of inexpensive smartphones in order to rank the best options that you can buy unlocked without monthly fees and, importantly, without a two-year contract.

No, these aren't the best smartphones available in Australia, so you won't find the new Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge among them. Likewise, the new 4-inch iPhone SE is $599, so it misses the mark by about $150, as lovely as it is.

Here's a selection of our favourite budget and mid-range smartphones. If you're looking to pick up a decent handset for not much cash, these are the top cheap phones your money can buy – even on a budget.

While flagship makers battle for the top spot with small bezels and pixel-perfect cameras, Motorola has been winning a more quiet, but equally important fight: to offer desired features in a phone without costing too much.

Speaking of features, the new Moto G5 Plus has them in spades. A fingerprint sensor, generous heaps of internal storage with microSD support, Google Assistant, fast charging, 4K video capture capability – the list goes on.

Perfect for those on a budget who don’t want to sacrifice decent performance and flagship-style features, the the Moto G5 Plus has redefined itself and it didn't even have to. The premium build, competent specs and low price will suit deal-seekers and phone enthusiasts alike.

Android Nougat with Google Assistant, Moto’s slick (and light) custom touches, premium design and stacked list of features all make this more than your ordinary phone. All for $399, you say? That’s an easy sell.

With a beautiful look and feel that looks almost indistinguishable from Oppo's higher end models, the Oppo A57 delivers a premium look and feel without costing an arm and a leg.

Like all Oppo phones, the A57 has a magnificent camera that works well in low-light situations. It also has the benefit of carrying over Oppo's Beauty Mode for seriously flattering selfies (you know a smartphone is serious about selfies when the front-facing camera has a higher megapixel sensor than the rear).

Add to this a front-facing fingerprint sensor, expandable storage via microSD, a terrific build that remains slim and stylish, and what you have is a mid-range phone that's easy to recommend at $328.

Admittedly, we'd have liked a 1080p screen rather than the 720p one that the A57 sports, and ColorOS may be a little too close to iOS for many Android users' tastes, but it's still hard to overlook a phone of this quality at the price listed above.

Is a blisteringly fast gaming experience on a 2K resolution screen important to you? If it's not, the Moto G4 Play may very well have everything you're looking for in a phone for next to nothing unlocked.

The Moto G4 Play just wants to have some fun. It isn't necessarily the most skilled at any one thing, but it's hard to look away from a deal this good.

Sitting at the bottom of the G4 totem pole in terms of specs, the G4 Play is generally lacking in marquee features found in the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, like the water-repellant coating and fingerprint sensor, respectively.

But does that make it a bad phone? Nope, just one that's definitely not for everyone. Still, going for as low as $279 price point on the Motorola online store, everyone can afford this unlocked smartphone. Even if you love flagship phones, it's hard not to be impressed with the G4 Play, the new budget-priced ruler of Android smartphones.

best cheap phone 2016

It's really, really difficult to fit an Apple phone on a best cheap phones list, but there has to be at least one that's inexpensive enough for iOS fans who refuse to try Android.

The cheapest is the iPhone 5S. The best deal we've been able to find through a carrier is Telstra, which has the 16GB version available for $369 on an pre-paid plan. Alternatively, you could buy it outright on the Kogan website for $429, no contracts required.

You're only getting 16GB, but then again, so are entry-level iPhone SE owners. It comes in space gray or silver, has Touch ID and a still-impressive 8MP camera and runs iOS 10.

A budget phone with a fantastic build quality, the Oppo F1s delivers exceptional battery life (3 days), a HD screen and a fingerprint reader for just under $320. Not only that, it also provides a noteworthy photographical experience.

This is largely thanks to the phone's impressive front facing 16MP camera (compared to its 13MP rear camera), which allows users to take panoramic selfies.

Couple this with Oppo's Beautify 4.0 selfie software, and what you have is a phone that will go out of its way to show you in a flattering light.

In terms of performance, the Oppo F1s can get a little bogged down by intensive apps, however, if you want a budget phone with a premium feel, it's hard to beat.

Though it's unlikely to win any awards in the innovation department, the Samsung Galaxy J2 is a reliable handset that boasts a bright Super AMOLED screen at an affordable price point.

The J2, which is exclusive to Boost Mobile, also performs admirably when it comes to battery life, and even allows users to swap out the battery if they need a bit of extra juice.

Add to that the ability to add extra storage space via MicroSD (up to 128GB), and what you get is a full-featured Galaxy experience for under $200.

Considering its relatively low $299 price, the Sony Xperia XA is rather brazen for a mid-range phone. It’s powerful enough to handle everyday tasks and its looks show that you’re definitely getting your dollar’s worth here in that regard.

Outdoors visibility is surprisingly good too. The Xperia XA kicks into a sort of 'turbo' mode when it senses it's in a bright environment, altering colour and contrast to keep the screen as comprehensible as possible.

The Sony Xperia XA's front camera is pretty sound, and unusual in some respects. It's an 8MP sensor, which is common enough, but has autofocus. A lot of selfie cameras have a fixed-focus lens, under the notion that you're probably going to hold the phone at arm's length and point it at yourself.

The Sony Xperia XA is a slim, good-looking phone that has some high-end charm at a reasonably affordable price. There are better phones out there, but if you like Sony's Xperia style, the Xperia XA is a worthwhile choice that won't break your budget.

Lenovo has seamlessly continued Motorola's good work, refining this popular budget range and elevating expectations about what you can reasonably expect in a relatively cheap Android phone.

The gap between the Moto G4 Plus and the latest batch of Android flagships is not as wide as I expected. It's a pleasurable device to use, and it represents good value for money.

If you've been looking for something with a big screen and a good camera, and you can stretch beyond the bottom tier, the Moto G4 Plus is definitely a good buy.

Fitbit Blaze is $60 off for Amazon Prime Day

Fitbit Blaze is $60 off for Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day may be in its final few hours, but there are still stellar deals coming through the wire, including this one on the Fitbit Blaze.

Fitbit Blaze is $60 off for Amazon Prime members, bringing the fitness watch's price to just $138.95. That's way down from its everyday price of $198.95.

You'll have to be a Prime or Prime Student member to get the on sale Fitbit Blaze price, and there's still time to get a free Prime trial right now.

We suggest you hurry juuussttt a little bit though as Amazon Prime Day ends at 11:59pm PT July 11 / 2:59am ET July 12. The Fitbit Blaze won't be in stock until July 16, but the discounted price applies if you order today.

Fitbit Blaze deal on Amazon Prime Day

Fitbit Blaze is actually late to the fitness tracker deals party; the rest of the Fitbit family saw deep discounts beginning on Monday, and those are still going strong.

What sets the Fitbit Blaze apart from other Fitbit fitness trackers is that it's really more of a smartwatch.

It has a stunning amount of battery life, a big color display and multi-sport tracking. This is a device you can wear during a workout, then dress to impress with, all the while counting your steps.

As Amazon's best selling pedometer, the Fitbit Blaze is a already popular device, but with the special Prime Day discount, it could prove even more popular. At least, for the next few hours.

Microsoft ends all support for Windows Phone

Microsoft ends all support for Windows Phone

It's time to pour one out for Windows Phone 8.1, as Microsoft officially ended support for the mobile platform today.

Forecast previously on an official page, Windows Phone 8.1 — and by extension, the Windows Phone platform as many know it — will no longer receive any further upgrades, updates or security check-ups from Microsoft.

While this is an end to the era of Microsoft attempting to wrest a piece of the mobile pie away from iOS and Android, the PC purveyor's work in the sphere isn't quite finished.

Windows 10 Mobile, the mobile extension of Microsoft's desktop OS and successor to Windows Phone 8.1, is still kicking. Microsoft is even rumored to have new Windows 10 Mobile handsets in the works.

As to where Microsoft could take its mobile initiative next, CEO Satya Nadella teased earlier this year that the company is still interested in making smartphones, though they may not look like the ones we're used to.

While it's speculation, we're crossing our fingers that Microsoft isn't done with mobile just yet, and that Nadella is teasing something big — possibly the rumored Surface Phone — as the technology behemoth's next project.

In the meantime, here's to Windows Phone 8.1 — it, um… definitely tried.

Amazon Prime Day last-minute deals: grab these before they’re gone

Amazon Prime Day last-minute deals: grab these before they’re gone

So you just found out about Amazon Prime Day, it’s no big deal. Sure, other people have been scoring sweet deals all day while you were unaware. It’s whatever. I mean, the deals couldn’t have been that good, right?

OK, let’s say, just for a minute, you were interested in seeing how amazing some of the deals for Amazon Prime Day are – not saying that you’d even want anything – what should you look at?

Thankfully for you last-minute shoppers we’ve rounded up the best last-minute deals for Amazon Prime Day, a collection of steals that will help you save face to all your friends and will allow you to say “Amazon Prime Day? Oh yeah, I’ve known about it for ages. I found loads of good deals. Check it out."

We're in a bit of a time crunch – Amazon Prime Day comes to an end at midnight PT – so we don’t have a second to lose. Here’s the best of the best of what’s left.

Amazon Echo Dot in White or Black $34.99 @ Amazon (was $49.99)

People scoffed at the Amazon Echo Dot a few months ago. “What?” they said, “Why would I buy a device that only buys more stuff from Amazon?” The Echo Dot isn’t a tool to help you load up your house with useless commodities from the world’s largest online retailer – it’s the entryway to your future smart home, a personalized assistant and allows you to control your music without pulling out your phone. It’s also on sale for just $35 today on Amazon.

Xbox One S with Halo 5, Forza 6 and Recore $239 @ Amazon (was $369)

Everyone knows Sony and Microsoft are in a dead heat in this generation’s console war. Anything Sony does, Microsoft does too. The good news is that same theory applies to discounts as well. Take for instance today’s Amazon Prime Day deal that sees a brand-new Sony PS4 Slim with one game for $229. Not bad, right? Now, consider the Xbox One S with three games – Halo 5: Guardians, Forza Motorsport 6 and Recore – for just $10 more. Play either side of the fence on this one and you’ll still come out a winner.

Exploding Kittens Card Game $14.99 @ Amazon (was $24.99)

Even if you’ve never read any of his profound webcomic series, The Oatmeal knows how to make great board games. One of our favorites is Exploding Kittens: A Card Game About Kittens and Explosions and Sometimes Goats – a card game in which you use cats and wits in equal measure to avoid being blown up. Your friends are either going to love it, or they’ll be mad at you for leaving putting them between a rock and an explosive place. So…win-win?

UE BOOM 2 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker $128 @ Amazon (was $199.99)

One product category we get asked about frequently is Bluetooth speakers. Everyone wants one, and yet no one seems sure which one to pick up. Even if it wasn’t on sale today for Amazon Prime Day, the answer would be the UE BOOM 2 – there’s a good reason it sits at the top of our Best Bluetooth Speakers list month-after-month. We like the BOOM 2 for a few reasons. First, it gets incredibly loud. Second, it has a great battery life. Third, and in spite of the first two reasons, it actually sounds good. That’s three very good reasons to go for the BOOM 2 – especially for $70 off its regular price.

Oral-B Pro 7000 Electric Toothbrush $85.00 @ Amazon (was $219.99)

Bathroom tech might not be the most glamorous thing to talk about, but when a deal this good comes around, we feel obligated to open up our mouths. Inside said mouths will be blisteringly white teeth thanks to the Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries Electric Toothbrush, on sale today for $85 from its usual retail price of $219.99. It’s not as fun as a new Kindle Fire 7 or Sony BRAVIA XBR-65X850E, but it’s a helluva lot more fun than a trip to the dentist.

Element 50-inch Fire TV with Sound Bar and Digital Antenna $499 (was $659)

One of the best deals for Amazon Prime Day was the 55-inch 4K Element Fire TV Edition TV that was selling for $399 earlier in the day. Unfortunately, that’s gone. Early bird gets the 4K UHD TV and all that. What’s left is a 50-inch TV from Element that may not come packed to the gills with 4K UHD goodness, but will come packed with a brand-new soundbar and digital antenna to help you catch all the local channels without paying for cable.

GoPro Session w/ Handler, 32GB SD Card and Headstrap $149 (was $202.46)

You’ll have to move fast to pick up this deal on the GoPro Session action cam that comes with a GoPro Handler, 32GB SD Card from Samsung and an AmazonBasics Headstrap. It’s on sale today only for $149.99 – around 25% off its regular retail price of $202.46.

Vivere Double Hammock with Steel Stand $79.98 @ Amazon (was $119.99)

OK, so the Vivere Double Hammock isn’t exactly a consumer tech gadget, but us nerds need to take a nap from time-to-time too. When we do, we prefer it to be in a hammock that we bought at a discount during shopping events. (I might be speaking for myself personally there.) On a more serious note, this Double Hammock is $40 off its retail price, comes very highly rated and comes in four varying-levels-of-fun designs.

iRobot Roomba 652 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner $249.99 @ Amazon (was $374.99)

But while you’re out on the hammock taking a siesta, someone has to vacuum. Leave that mess to the iRobot Roomba 652 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner, on sale for $249.99. This intelligent vacuum can pick up the house while you’re out enjoying the sun and catching some zzz’s. The Room 652 runs for around 60 minutes on a single charge, then retreats back to its docking cradle for a siesta of its own.

Sony XB950B1 Extra Bass Wireless Headphones $98.00 @ Amazon (was $198.00)

One last deal worth mulling over is the one happening for the Sony XB950B1 Extra Bass Wireless Headphones – available today for just under $100. No, they’re not Beats, but that’s probably a good thing. The Extra Bass series caters to low-end lovers, too but they try to preserve a natural EQ curve making it bass-heavy enough for EDM while still holding their own in rock and pop genres.

  • It's Amazon Prime Day 2017, the online shopping giant's annual mega sale, with exclusive deals for Amazon Prime members – and if you’re not already signed up you can get a free trial today. Stick with TechRadar to find out how and when to grab all the best deals.

  • Beats Powerbeats3 wireless in-ear headphones ($199): A tough build, great battery life and excellent bass response and good wireless range makes the Beats Powerbeats3 a pretty darn good option if you don’t like the feel of over-ear headphones squashing your ear lobes. • DJI Phantom 3 Standard drone ($649): Get airborne and save some dosh on a brand-new toy to try out this weekend. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard quadcopter is now $649 at JB Hi-Fi – that’s $200 on its regular retail price. Shoot 2.7K videos and click 12MP stills, plus track your flight with the built-in GPS. Essentially, have some fun and save some cash in the bargain too.

For it’s diminutive size, it promises big sound, a wireless range of 60m and about 8 hours of battery life. Retailing at an already budget price of $89 makes this little wireless speaker a steal, but it’s cheaper yet at nearly half price at JB Hi-Fi. Get it now for just $44!

Deals added Wednesday, July 5 and still available

  • Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (from $899): Don’t pay full price on Apple’s latest flagship handsets. Google Pixel 2 XL leak could show the phone for the first time

Google Pixel 2 XL leak could show the phone for the first time

As rumors continue to grow regarding the Google Pixel 2, it appears we may have our best look so far at the larger version of the Google's next-generation Android phone.

A rendering of what is reportedly the 2017 Google Pixel XL has surfaced via Android Police. Though not a final design, the report claims that the images are still representative of what direction Google is taking its latest phone.

The image comes from a source Android Police deems "extremely reliable," showing both the front and back of the upcoming extra-large handset, as seen below:

While not a dramatic shift from the original Pixel's design, there are still some noticeable changes — primarily a not-as-distinct antenna band, a smaller glass portion on the back, and a trimmed-down bezel.

According to the report, two other features were teased for the supposed 2017 Pixel XL. The first is a 6-inch AMOLED screen courtesy of LG, which could help step up the Pixel's display game with the likes of other top-shelf phones such as the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8.

Additionally, the 2017 Pixel XL is reported to also feature squeezable sides as a means of added controls, à la the Edge Sense feature seen in the HTC U11

None of these features were confirmed for the normal-sized 2017 Google Pixel
— but then again, Google hasn't confirmed anything at this time regarding its next big handset, so it's still wise to take this news with a grain of salt.

As for when we will learn more concrete information about the Pixel 2 lineup, Google is expected to make an announcement later this year. In the meantime, we're crossing our fingers that that sweet bezel-less design is here to stay.
