HTC U11 unveiled – squeezable sides coming to the flagship space

To mark the 20th anniversary of HTC's life as a technology company, the brand has launched the new HTC U11.

The new handset features a large screen and waterproof body, and offers the chance to squeeze the phone to take a picture or fire up the camera.

The phone will also come with Alexa integration as well as Google Assistant, although it's not clear why both are enabled on the phone, rather than just one.

The HTC U11 will also pack four microphones to allow for 3D recording, even allowing you to zoom into the video and have the sound follow as well.

The HTC U11 camera has scored 90 on the DxOMark scale, the highest for a smartphone snapper… although that doesn't mean it's going to be the best camera out there. Previous phones from HTC and others have scored well on the scale, but not offered the best snaps 'from the wrist', as in taking a snap without having to put in a lot of effort with framing.

The phone won't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but there will be a new set of headphones in the box – the HTC U Sonic. These can detect the noise inside your ear and map the space to give you strong audio feedback tailored to you.

The headphones will have active noise cancellation… right out of the box. That's pretty impressive, and BoomSound is included as well, with larger resonance chambers to increase the output.

HTC's president of smartphones Chialin Chang took to the stage to announce the new phone, and highlight some of the key moments in the company's history in terms of innovation and smartphone upgrade.
