Apple’s 5G testing plans give a glimpse of future iPhones
Apple may be expanding its phone tech with more than the iPhone 8, as it appears the tech giant is also planning to test 5G wireless communications.
The iPhone maker has applied with the FCC for a license to test millimeter-wave wireless technology, possibly hinting at a way to increase the upload and download times of connected iOS devices, according to Business Insider.
Specifically, Apple is testing of 28 and 39GHz wireless bands beamed between two locations in California. It's unclear what exactly Apple is planning to do with the tech, though the application mentions using 28GHz bands for earth-to-space transmission.
That last part is particularly intriguing, as reports from last month claim Apple hired two executives experienced in space engineering, speculating that the company may also be looking into launching its own internet satellites.
Apple's filings with the FCC come during an unexpectedly busy time for the company, as it's currently in a court battle with chipmaker Qualcomm over anti-competitive contracts.
For now, the famously mum Cupertino company hasn't made any formal announcements regarding satellite coverage or 5G internet connectivity. As for when we will learn more on what Apple's been cooking up these days, we have high hopes for June 5 when Apple kicks off its annual WWDC event.
